Shipping Decarbonization Forum: Vessel Electrification and Battery Charging Infrastructure (HKUST)

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is holding a half-day Shipping Decarbonization Forum – Vessel Electrification and Battery Charging Infrastructure on Thursday 19 November 2026, during Hong Kong Maritime Week. HKBIA is passing it on to members. The subject – where vessels will charge, and what shoreside infrastructure Hong Kong builds – reaches well beyond cargo shipping.

Admission   Free, by registration. Seating is limited and the organiser may cap the number of attendees per company.

• Opening remarks by Captain Hon Lothair Lam Ming-fung, Legislative Council (Transport), and Mr Benjamin Wong, Invest Hong Kong
• Vessel electrification policy under the National 15th Five-Year Plan – Water Transport Institute, Ministry of Transport
• Building a zero-emission shipping corridor in the Greater Bay Area – Guangzhou Port Shipping
• Latest battery, charging and battery-swap technology – ePropulsion
• Lessons from the electric ferry pilot scheme – Sun Ferry
• Round table 1 – charging and battery swapping for electric inland cargo vessels arriving in Hong Kong
• Round table 2 – providing charging at typhoon shelters and other local vessel moorings, moderated by the Business Environment Council, with CLP, ePropulsion, MBTA and the Hong Kong Pilots Association among the panellists

The second round table is the one closest to home. HKUST puts the local fleet at 20,121 licensed vessels in 2025, Class IV pleasure vessels among them, and the question of who installs charging points in typhoon shelters and local berthing areas is still open. Members with a view on it will find the right people in the room.

The forum is organised by the HKUST Institute for the Environment and the HKUST Division of Environment and Sustainability, sponsored by Invest Hong Kong, and supported by the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, the MBTA and the GHKFAL.
