    Dear Members,

    Kung Hei Fat Choi

It has been a challenging start to the year of the Rat!  As a result of the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (2019-NCOV) our second speakers’ event in February has been postponed, but the Association did manage to have an excellent tour of the IDEC Sport Maxi-Trimaran skippered by Francis Joyon in January, and Dr Lindsay Porter, who spoke on Hong Kong’s Dolphins and Porpoise, was our first presenter for the Speakers Event which was held in December 2019.

The ICOMIA Congress which was planned for Zhuhai in May is another event that is been affected by travel restrictions and will be held instead in Italy. Therefore, the planned ICOMIA/IMG HK Marina Tour has also been cancelled. We hope there will be another occasion or event in the near future which ICOMIA will be back in Asia.

Best wishes for the Year of the Rat!

    Lawrence Chow

    Chairman

A group of HKBIA members toured the IDEC Sport Maxi-Trimaran with Gilles Chiorri followed with a presentation by Francis Joyon at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. A great experience to the future record breaking Maxi-Trimaran. We wish IDEC all the best in their record sail to London on the fabled Tea Run from Hong Kong

    萬勿錯過為一由香港遊艇業總會(HKBIA)舉辨之IDEC Sport Maxi三體帆船與Francis Joyon同行之旅. 參觀後簡介及酒會隋即舉行.

The first Speaker's Event organised by the Hong Kong Boating Industry Association was hosted by the international law firm, INCE, and presented by Dr Lindsay Porter.

When it comes to marine mammals in Hong Kong, this passionate scientist is Hong Kong's answer to David Attenborough. Dr Porter is a senior research scientist at the University of St Andrews, home to the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU), and oversees all of the university’s marine mammal research. She is an expert on the two species of marine mammals found in Hong Kong – the Chinese white (or pink) dolphin, and the finless porpoise, and she has now been studying these unique and endangered creatures for more than 20 years.

Both species are negatively impacted by continued habitat degradation, and population numbers are plummeting. Long term studies of the dolphins have revealed much information on social dynamics, life history patterns, and habitat use; the finless porpoise is rather more elusive.

The audience of Association members and guests were completely enthralled by the presentation, and now know how to tell the different species of cetaceans apart - or at least try to!

On 25th October, Hong Kong BIA participated in the “Asia-Pacific Yacht Industry High-Level Forum” organised by the Macau Yacht Show. The Forum covered 3 areas: Developing the Sailing Yacht Economy, Yachting in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and Yachting and Marine Economic Development.

The Keynote speaker was Tong Shing, President of the Hong Kong Sailing Federation, (Bluefin Sea Sports –HKBIA member) on the development of the sailing yacht economy. It was then followed with a panel discussion on the development of the yacht industry in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the Development in the Marine Industry. Lawrence Chow (Chairman), gave a speech on the potential benefits to the industry within the GBA and how Hong Kong could be the key player in the overall strategy. He also highlighted the bottleneck the industry faces due to the lack of moorings and how this could affect the overall GBA strategy. The forum was concluded with speech from Andy Treadwell on the key elements that are needed to grow boating Treadwell believes that the whole of the industry, from sailboats to superyachts and all the businesses in between and alongside, will only develop if governments understand the huge potential economic impact and social benefits that a developing boating industry would bring.

Collaboration is the key to development, and if key industry players can work together and lobby governments in the right way, then the market will flourish.
